Haoqi is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Design at Northwestern University. His work advances the design of integrated socio-technical models that solve complex problems and advance human values at scale. His research bridges the fields of Human-Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Social & Crowd Computing, Learning Science, and Decision Science. He received his PhD in Computer Science and BA in Computer Science and Economics from Harvard University.
Eleanor "Nell" O'Rourke
Assistant Professor Of Computer Science And Learning Sciences; Co-Director, Delta Lab
Nell is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science and the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University. Her research explores the design of novel computational systems to help learners develop motivation and effective practices in STEM domains. Recent projects include the design of situated feedback models to promote the growth mindset, studying how game mechanics encourage novices to practice effective problem-solving skills, and developing learner-centered web inspection tools that help novice web developers learn directly from professional websites. Her interventions have been used by over 100,000 students online, adopted by companies, and integrated into classrooms. She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington as a member of the Center for Game Science. Her work has been funded through four NSF grants totaling over $2 million, and has been recognized through best paper honorable mentions at UIST and CHI, as well as the Google Anita Borg Scholarship and the Microsoft Research Graduate Women's Scholarship.

Matt is an associate professor in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. He received his PhD in 2010 from the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, where he was a fellow in the Institute for Educational Science’s Program for Interdisciplinary Educational Research and a Siebel Scholar. His research focuses on technology for the new civics – producing scientifically supported educational technology to create informed and engaged citizens who can solve the serious policy problems facing our society such as poverty, global warming and militarism. Training such citizens requires us to understand how competent citizens analyze policy, communicate issues, and organize to make change. It also requires us to design more effective educational technology that can teach the knowledge, skills and dispositions citizens need.

Liz is the Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Communication Studies at Northwestern University with courtesy appointments in Computer Science and Learning Sciences. Her current research is in the area of collaborative technologies and design. She examines how technology harnesses the diverse and untapped resources from distributed networks to tackle societal challenges with greater speed and participation that was unimaginable just over a decade ago. She publishes her work in prestigious Human Computer Interaction, Design, and Learning Science outlets and sustains her work with 28+ grants from institutions including NSF, Mozilla Foundation, MacArthur Foundations, and the industry. her work has been featured in the popular press outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio, and Fast Company, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, ABC, and Oprah. Liz is the faculty founder of Design for America, a national network of social innovators. The network trains students to use design thinking to improve the lives of the under-served through community partnerships. In 2018, Design for America received the prestigious Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt Design Museum Award for Institutional Excellence given in recognition of an institution that uses design as a strategic tool as part of its mission, and has consistently exhibited ingenuity and insight in the relationship between design and quality of life.
Gobi Dasu

Gobi is a 5th year PhD candidate in Computer Science advised by Prof. Haoqi Zhang and Prof. Nell O'Rourke. His research interests are in Engineer Training, the Future of Work, and ICT4D. Currently, there is a need to train enough engineers to meet 21st century demand, but MOOCs only go so far. Gobi is interested in problems in this space from both a research and practical perspective. Specifically, he is working on the rale-modules project, which is a sensemaking procedure and tool that will help novice programmers gain an architectural understanding of professional websites, and then use that understanding to build their own applications. Outside of the lab, he tries to apply HCI research lessons to LD Talent, a platform he started that financially incentivizes engineers to learn new skills and then matches them with work opportunities. Gobi received his undergrad and masters in Computer Science from Stanford University. Gobi is also obsessed with productivity techniques. He invented a new way of frictionless time tracking for developers in slack: Developer Time Tracking using Slack – beyond Fixed Price vs Hourly.

Julian was a summer research scholar and doctoral candidate in educational technology at Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Spain). His current research is focused on human behaviour study in participatory public experiments. She uses design-based research methods to design, build, and test continual support systems, primarily situated in studio- based learning environments. Her current interest is to study how technology might facilitate surfacing challenges and coordinating support within research communities of practice, and further explore possible learning and growth outcomes for students. She hopes that these systems will enhance and extend the natural ways in which communities reflect, learn, grow, and provide support for one another in our communities. Ryan Louie

Ryan is a PhD candidate in the Technology and Social Behavior program a joint program between the Computer Science and Communication departments. In his graduate work, Ryan is interested in how to design social technologies that support meaningfully connecting in ways that conveniently fit into our daily lives. To tackle this problem, he is designing and researching technologies that identify opportunistic moments to engage in shared experiences and activities and facilitate social connecting interactions in those moments. To prototype his ideas, he develops computational platforms that support the implementation and execution of these opportunistic, structured social interactions. He identifies as an HCI researcher who uses social science theories to craft his designs and AI techniques to forge the systems he builds. Before Northwestern, he studied at Olin College where he received a B.S. in Engineering with a concentration in Robotics.

He is interested in technology that interconnects physical spaces and digital media, augmented and virtual reality, and astronomy . Kevin's previous projects explored low-fidelity prototyping methods facilitated by Google Glass, and a virtual reality game player using the Oculus Rift can direct a person in the physical world as their avatar or character. Currently, he was working on building a platform to facilitate collective experiences.

He started taking classes at school and fell in love with the subject. The freedom in problem solving allowed him to be creative in a way that no other subject had before.
